Can you believe it? We’re four days into the new year already! And I haven’t written the customary ‘Happy New Year’ post! But I have a good reason. Like last year, I welcomed this year 35,000 ft in the air. We caught the sun rising over Mumbai and San Francisco. What a mesmerizing spectacle! The sky looked like a strawberry and tangerine layer cake floating in cloudy marshmallow sauce. It’s times like this I don’t feel like whipping out my phone to take pictures.
My toddler was asleep in my lap, the plane was quiet except for the occasional whimper from an uncomfortable child. I just sat there, enjoying the serenity. I also threw out a wish into the Universe!
2016 ended well for me from a writing perspective. One of my personal essays got Discover’ed by the WordPress Editors – https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/53424024/posts/20198 and another post that I had submitted to a South Asian literary magazine and forgotten about, finally got accepted! http://theaerogram.com/sisterhood-semolina-cakes/
Here’s hoping this spate of acceptances continues in 2017!
I’m really not a “resolutions” person. When Conan O’Brien said- “I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, I make New Year’s Vague Declarations of Semi-Intent,” I’m pretty sure he was talking about me! So I’ve made a list of things I want to do more of. I started doodling in my notebook on the flight and I came up with this.
Nothing groundbreaking, but I’m going to keep it simple this year. And oh, one more thing I want to continue doing is to write, without holding back and without procrastinating. Wish me luck!
Hope you’re having a great start to the New Year. I’ll leave you with my favorite quote from Neil Gaiman. Hope 2017 is kinder on all of us! Happy New Year!
